How is Hail Caused

Hail is the end result when thunderstorms have warm updrafts that lift raindrops into colder parts of the atmosphere. At that point, the precipitation freezes before plummeting to the ground in sizes that vary from small pebbles to softballs. This is called hail. The stronger the updraft, the more times the hail stones will be lifted into the supercooled atmosphere, which results in larger hail.

What to Do About Hail Damage

If you have reason to suspect hail damage, contact a roofing contractor. They will be able to safely climb on top of your home to take an up-close look at each shingle. They will also carefully mark the areas where shingles have been damaged and need to be replaced so that you can avoid issues ranging from wood rot to mold and mildew growth on your shingles.

FAQ About Hail Damage

A roof must be physically inspected by a roofing specialist with the training and experience to assess hail damage. Fortunately, most home insurance companies regularly send their insurance adjusters to specialized training so they can properly assess what hail damage looks like to property. However, there is generally not much in ongoing training for the roofing or home inspection industries.

Unfortunately, missing shingles related to wind damage claims only happen during a hail storm if the winds are very strong. Our experience has shown us that hail damage may not physically cause leakage for several years after a hail storm!
